Retiring the Penny
Production for the Penny Ends
The U.S. Treasury has announced it will stop producing pennies. The Federal Reserve will continue to distribute remaining inventory, but it’s not guaranteed that pennies will be available everywhere. Here’s what you need to know about how pennies will be used going forward.
What to Know
Production End Date
The U.S. Treasury has already received its final order of penny blanks, and reports share that the final penny is being minted November 2025.
Using Pennies
Existing pennies will still be legal tender. However, you may see fewer places where pennies can be used easily as businesses adapt to this change.
Changes in the Bank
With the penny’s retirement, stock of pennies in Webster Five branches is limited. Your transactions may look different if you have or request change. Please review the FAQs for details.
