History of Webster Five

On August 10th, 1868 Webster Five opened for business with 20 deposits made at our first location in the J.F. Hind Store on the Main Street, Spaulding’s Block of Webster.

Two years and 710 depositors later, the bank moved to larger quarters in the Dresser Block. In 1954, our headquarters became the attractive red brick building at 290 Main Street. After opening our new corporate headquarters on Thompson Road in 1980, 290 Main Street became our downtown office.

Many area residents came Webster Five for mortgages, loans, and savings accounts during the postwar housing boom. Local businesses, flourishing in the postwar area, also relied heavily on the institution during this time of commercial and community growth.

To better serve the needs of surrounding communities, Webster Five opened branches in Oxford and Dudley during the 1960s and 1970s. And now, Auburn, Worcester, and Shrewsbury are part of the branch network.

Strengthening its position as a financial leader in the community, Webster Five was one of the first local banks to offer totally free checking and has led the way with online banking and enhanced technology, all to make the lives of time-starved customers easier.

Today, supported by our solid history and secure financial base, Webster Five has developed a reputation for outstanding personal service, community support, and fiscal strength. In addition, our expanded branch network has made it more convenient than ever for area residents and businesses to bank with us.
